Fusing Interaction and Physical World
Advances in materials and new manufacturing techniques allow blending the computation and physical worlds in the ways that were not possible before. With every new turn in technology development (e.g., discovering a novel "smart" material, inventing a more efficient manufacturing process or designing a faster microprocessor) there are new and exciting ways to take user interfaces away from the screen and blend them into our living spaces and everyday objects, making them more responsive, intelligent and adaptive.

As the user interfaces and computers disappear into the background, fusing into the physical world around us, the old tried-and-true paradigms for designing interaction must be re-evaluated, re-designed and, in some cases, discarded to take advantage of the new and exciting possibilities. While the challenges and opportunities are distinct, the fundamental goal remains the same: to provide for the effortless and effective consumption, control and transmission of information at any time and in any place, while delivering a unique experience that is only possible with these emerging technologies.

In this presentation, Dr. Poupyrev will present work produced by him and the research group that he has been directing at Disney Research, Pittsburgh and which addresses these exciting challenges. He will cover projects investigating tactile and haptics interfaces, deformable computing devices, augmented reality interfaces and novel touch sensing techniques, as well as biologically-inspired and 3D-printed interfaces, among others. The presentation will cover both projects conducted while at Sony Corporation and more recent research efforts in the Interaction Group at Walt Disney Research, Pittsburgh.


Dr. Ivan Poupyrev, Director of Interaction Group, Disney Research, Pittsburgh
Dr. Ivan Poupyrev directs an Interaction Technology group in Disney Research's Pittsburgh Lab, Walt Disney Imagineering, a unit of Walt Disney Company tasked with dreaming up and developing future technologies for Disney parks, resorts, and cruises.

Dr. Poupyrev's research focuses on inventing new interactive technologies for the seamless blending of digital and physical properties in devices, everyday objects, and living environments, a direction he broadly refers to as physical computing. It spans a broad range of research fields including haptic user interfaces, tangible interfaces, shape-changing and flexible computers, augmented and virtual reality as well as spatial 3D interaction. His research was broadly published and received awards at prestigious academic conferences, exhibited world-wide and extensively reported in popular media, such as CNN, BBC, Financial Times, New York Times, New Scientist to name a few. The results of his research were also released on the market in various consumer products and applications.

Prior to Disney, Ivan has worked as a researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories and the Advanced Telecommunication Research Institute International, both in Japan. He also had a stint at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory at the University of Washington as a Visiting Scientist while working on his Ph.D. dissertation in Hiroshima University, Japan.

The Future of Additive Manufacturing and Introduction to NAMII
Brett Lambert, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manufacturing and Industrial Base Policy, will discuss how the DoD plans to implement additive manufacturing in the future.

Mike Molnar, Chief Manufacturing Officer, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will discuss the importance of additive manufacturing in U.S. commerce now and in the future, as well as his vision of manufacturing in our economy.

Ed Morris, Director, National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), will provide an introduction to NAMII, which is working to transform the U.S. manufacturing sector and yield significant advancements throughout industry.


Brett Lambert, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manufacturing and Industrial Base Policy
Brett B. Lambert joined the US Department of Defense (DoD) in 2009 as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manufacturing and Industrial Base. Mr. Lambert serves as the principal advisor to the USD (AT&L) on all matters relating to the defense industrial base, including industrial capabilities and assessments; defense industry mergers, acquisitions and consolidation; preservation of essential industries and technologies; and other related matters. In 2011 he was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service for work in his current position.

Prior to joining the DoD, Mr. Lambert spent 20 years working with defense and intelligence firms. From 1989 until 2007, Mr. Lambert held positions of increasing responsibility at DFI International, a national security consultancy he built with the founder and which he assisted in selling in 2007.

At the conclusion of his tenure with DFI, Mr. Lambert held the titles of Executive Vice President of DFI International and Managing Director of DFI Investment Partners. He was also the company’s Ethics Officer and served as a member of the Board of Directors. Mr. Lambert specialized in technology assessments, strategic planning, and market analyses for defense, intelligence, and space companies. His engagements assisted client’s identification and quantification of new or evolving markets, described the political and business environments in which they operated, and provided execution guidance to ensure the implementation of successful ventures. Mr. Lambert also worked closely with a number of leading venture funds, merchant banks, and private equity firms in support of their national security portfolio companies.

While with DFI, Mr. Lambert also led the company’s work with first-tier defense firms, financial institutions, and private equity organizations in merger and acquisition market advisory services. Throughout his time with DFI, Mr. Lambert was engaged in scores of acquisitions, international joint ventures, offset arrangements, and foreign equity investments representing a wide variety of both buyers and sellers in the national security space.

Before joining DFI, Mr. Lambert worked for the US Department of State (USAID) at the American Embassy in New Delhi. Prior to this, he attended graduate school at Jawaharlal Nehru University on a Rotary Graduate Scholarship he received during his senior year at Kansas State University. He also worked as an independent journalist in India, Pakistan and Burma. Before his time in Asia, Mr. Lambert served in the Political-Military Group at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.


Michael F. Molnar, Chief Manufacturing Officer, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce
Mike Molnar likes to be introduced simply as “a manufacturing guy from industry”. After nearly thirty years in the private sector he recently was named as the first Chief Manufacturing Officer of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and also appointed director of the interagency National Program Office for Advanced Manufacturing. As called for by the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership initiative, the NPO’s mission is to foster industry-led partnerships and to form a “whole of government” approach to strengthen competitiveness and innovation in U.S. manufacturing.

Mike’s experience includes leadership roles in advanced manufacturing, metrology, manufacturing systems, quality, technology development, sustainability and industrial energy efficiency. His credentials include service as a Federal Fellow in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and election as Fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He is a licensed Professional Engineer, a Certified Manufacturing Engineer and a Certified Energy Manager. He received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame, and both a Master of Science in Manufacturing Systems Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He is an active member of professional societies, consortia and volunteer organizations.


Edward Morris, Director, National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII)
Edward Morris joined the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining as Vice President and NAMII Director in February 2013. Previously Mr. Morris was the Director of Mechanical Engineering & Manufacturing on the Lockheed Martin Corporate Engineering & Technology team.

Mr. Morris is the Chairman Emeritus of the National Defense Industrial Association’s (NDIA) Manufacturing Division, and is an active member of the Aerospace Industries Association’s (AIA) Engineering Management Committee, the joint industry/government Pb-free Electronics Risk Management (PERM) Consortium, and the Missile Defense Agency’s Transforming Defense Supply Chains Technical Advisory Board. He also serves as a member of the Industrial Advisory Boards for the Navy Electronics Manufacturing Productivity Facility, the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) Electronic Products and Systems Consortium at the University of Maryland, the National Science Foundation Center for Advanced Vehicle and Extreme Environment Electronics at Auburn University, and the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Lasers and Plasmas.

Mr. Morris has a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from the University of Texas at Arlington. He has more than 40 years of defense, commercial and international aerospace industry experience with emphasis on program management, engineering, procurement, and manufacturing. Mr. Morris is a nationally recognized leader in advanced manufacturing technology.

Additive Manufacturing: State of the Industry
Additive manufacturing and 3D printing are taking the world by storm, while gaining the attention of the largest and most respected corporations and publications. New machines, applications, and markets are developing like never before. Wohlers will discuss some of these developments and report industry growth figures, estimates, and forecasts. He will also present some of the most important trends, both current and long term. He will close with his views on what the future holds for this exciting and fast-changing industry.


Terry Wohlers, President, Wohlers Associates
Terry Wohlers is principal consultant and president of Wohlers Associates, Inc., an independent consulting firm he founded 27 years ago. Through this company, Wohlers has provided consulting assistance to more than 190 organizations in 23 countries. He has authored nearly 400 books, articles, and technical papers and has given 100 keynote presentations on five continents. He has been interviewed by Bloomberg, The Economist, Forbes, Fortune, USA Today, and many others, and has appeared on several television and radio news programs, including NPR. In 2007, more than 1,000 industry professionals from around the world selected Wohlers as the #1 most influential person in rapid product development and additive manufacturing.
